Why Twitter is the Perfect Place for Digital Missionaries

On Monday news broke that the Twitter Board had accepted a bid by Elon Musk to buy Twitter from them. And with that news came so much chatter about what Elon will do to make Twitter better or worse. In fact, it lasted all week and the debate actually became quite political eventually as one side of the political isle was more excited than another.

When you ask people about Twitter, they have a wide range of opinions about it. But, most of them are bad. In my opinion, Twitter has always seem to be the red-headed step-child of social media. People always made fun of it because it isn’t as popular as other social platforms and the company could never seem to figure out how to make money off of it. But, the one thing remains about Twitter is that it always seemed to be the place where news broke and celebrities shared announcements, more-so than any other social network.

Twitter Regardless of what happens with Twitter, the reality is that it was and always will be a place for digital missionaries. I have always called Twitter a beautiful train wreck. It is beautiful because it seems to be the one social media network that conversations can and do happen. It is where you can interact with everyone from celebrities, politicians, artists to average, everyday people at any time. No other platform gives you that opportunity to respond and converse like Twitter does. However, it is a train wreck because it can be a place where trolls and toxic conversations can happen quite regularly. That is why there is a huge need for digital missionaries on Twitter. In fact, Twitter is the perfect place for Digital Missionaries to be.

Whether or not people want to admit it, Twitter is the one social media platform that conversations happen. That makes it the perfect place for digital missionaries. Click To Tweet

People say all the time to “stay away from Twitter” because people can be so mean on the platform. But, if you are a digital missionary that is exactly why you should be there. Digital Missionaries share the hope and love of Jesus. And, if Twitter is an “evil” place to be, shouldn’t that be where believers and digital missionaries are?

Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

So, how do you shine light in the Twitter world? This is how I use Twitter to share about Jesus. I…

  • Share Bible verses
  • Share short Devotional Sidekick Tips
  • Encouraging others and offering prayer
  • Asking how I can pray for others and follow up with them later.

These are just some of the many ways you can minister to others on Twitter. What are you doing to have conversations on Twitter…not arguments…but conventions? How are you loving those around you, especially those who think differently than you? How are you encouraging those around you who are struggling in their faith? In fact, a while back Rey De Armas and I chatted about some best practices believers can have while on Twitter as they seek to minister and serve those on Twitter. Think of different ways, unique ways for you to minister and see how God uses you as a digital missionary to make an impact in the beautiful train wreck known as Twitter.

What do you think? How can you, as a digital missionary, use Twitter to share about Jesus?  Share your ideas below or on social media.
