Create Family Memories Over the Holidays

I enjoy running, but only running for my own therapy. I don’t do competitions or challenges. That is why I resisted the urge to run a 5k over Thanksgiving or the Christmas season. That was until my oldest daughter asked me to run a 5k with her. She wanted me to run with her. So, I did. Then, the next year my youngest daughter asked to come along and run with her. So, she did. Now, 3 years in, it has become a family tradition and memory for those two.

The holiday season is a really busy time of year. There ever family gatherings, Christmas parties to attend, gifts to get, and that’s just for your personal life. In ministry, there are other things to attend to like special services, extra events and gatherings to be in charge of.

Family Memories You Can Create

Here are 6 things parents can do with their family to create memories and traditions over the holiday season:

  1. Bake and decorate holiday cookies together. Let the kids get creative with the icing and sprinkles!
  2. Drive or walk around the neighborhood looking at holiday lights and decorations. Make it extra special and play Christmas music or sing Christmas carols while you look at the house.
  3. Donate gifts or canned goods together to a local charity for those in need. Teach kids the value of giving, especially in a season that is focused on getting.
  4. Make decorating the house a family event that the whole family participates in. For instance, decorate the tree as a family with everyone setting it up, putting up lights and ornaments.
  5. Read classic holiday books and poems like “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” together. But, don’t forget to read about the true Christmas story, the birth of Jesus. Find a family reading plan online and read through it each day leading up to Christmas.
  6. Find and attend a holiday festival or event together
