In mid-July 2023, Inter-Miami signed the worlds most well-known soccer player, and arguably the best soccer play of all-time, Lionel Messi. It was seen as the biggest signing by any team in the history of the MLS, even bigger than the signing of David Beckham back in 2007. At the time of the signing, Inter-Miami was ranked 15th out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference of the MLS. However, things have quickly changed, after just a few games.
For instance, Since Messi joined Inter Miami…
- The club’s Instagram account has grown from 1 million to 12.4 million. That is more than all NFL, MLB and NHL teams.
- Although ratings for his 1st two matches were not made known by Apple TV, which owns the rights to MLS soccer broadcasts, an average viewership of 1.75 million people tuned in on Televisa/Univision for his debut, making it the most-watched MLS telecast in Spanish in history (source).
- Jersey sales have been on fire. If you want a Messi Inter-Miami jersey you will have to wait at least 4 months to get one. Sales for all Inter-Miami jerseys, as a team, has soared 25 times normal!
- They are winning games! The team was in last place and now they have been winning since his arrival.
These are just some of the ways Messi has impacted Inter-Miami and the MLS. The bottom line is that bringing in the right person changed everything. Stadiums are sold out, fans are interested, the team is energized and there is a real energy behind soccer in America. In the same way, when you bring in the right person for your ministry, it can change everything that happens there, too.

Hiring the right staffer or brining in the right volunteer can really energize your ministry team. Here is how.
Competency and Skillset. Someone who is well-suited for their role will have the skills and expertise to handle their responsibilities effectively. Whether this person is a staffer or a volunteer, this person enables higher quality programs, operations and excitement within the Church. In fact, even as a volunteer, they can lead up and lead even without being the primary lead. See how.
Culture Fit. A person who fits in and meshes well with the Church’s culture, other staff and volunteers often brings positivity, collaboration and synergy to the team dynamic. There is a different energy that comes from someone who brings a positive outlook and energy than having a negative person on board.
Passion and Commitment – The right hire brings strong passion for their work and commitment to the church, fueling their motivation and energy to go above and beyond. This energizes the team and the Church in a powerful way.
Revitalization of a Ministry. All ministries go through ups and downs. Usually, a new ministry hire or key volunteer position will come in and try to revitalize a ministry. This is often the case in Youth and Children’s Ministry. With the new hire comes excitement and energy that draws positive attention and many people who have been “burned” by the ministry in the past will give it another shot because there is new leadership involved. It has to be acted on quickly, but it is possible.
Conclusion
Messi didn’t just turn around an organization, he have breathed new life into America soccer. Brining in the right person can be just the ignition your Church or ministry needs that will propel it to high impact for years. This is true for hiring staff members or having key volunteer positions filled. Overall, brining in the right fit for the church has cascading positive effects on efficiency, morale, growth and advancing the mission. It’s well worth taking the time to find that ideal candidate.
