How to be a Storyteller of the Gospel on Social Media

QUESTION: In all the different ways you use social media, do you ever think about how you can communicate the story of Christ on your personal social media accounts? Regardless of how you answered the above question, the reality is that we have a real opportunity to share the story of hope and Christ to people on our social media accounts. Now, I’m not saying all we should do is share about Christ on our social media accounts. I do not believe you should do that as you should use social media for all it’s great purposes. However, I’m simply advocating that we could use it more to talk about Christ. The good news is that you don’t have to be a vocational minister or social media guru to be a storyteller of gospel. Here is how you can become a storyteller of Christ on your social media. Be real. We all want to share our lives with others on social media and, when you think about sharing, you want to share the good things. That is wonderful to do, but if all you do is share all the great things that happen in your life and you don’t share anything else, people will tend to discount your posts and think you aren’t being “real”.  Now, I’m not telling you to vent your life frustrations out on social media…that could scare people off in a big way. But be real and authentic. People can tell if you are being authentic and sincere or not…even on social media. Be above the “drama”. Let’s be honest, there is A LOT of drama on social media these days. Whether it is this issue or that issue, people have strong opinions and many friendships have ended because of things said on social media. Be above the drama and make sure you communicate hope to people. If you want more encouragement on this, Justin Dean and I talk about this specifically here. Seth Muse and I talk about how to respond to negativity on social media here. Communicate about Christ. People are your friends for a reason. They like you! They really do. And if Christ is huge part of your life, then don’t hesitate to share about the goodness Christ has brought you and your family. More people will rejoice with you than hate you AND, who knows, hopefully one of your posts about Christ will be help or encourage a friend of yours who needs it. It may bring them closer to discovering God for the first time or rediscovering Him again. As you process how you can share about Christ on your social media accounts, it may seem a little overwhelming. The great news is that there are a variety of stories you can share about Christ. For instance, you could share…

  • a Bible verse that encouraged or challenged you
  • Something great your Church is doing in or for the community
  • a sermon or podcast that encouraged you in your faith
  • a worship song that inspires about Christ and who He is
There are countless other ideas you could share that could help cause someone to stop scrolling through, pause and reflect on your post. And it may be that simple posting that you make that could make someones day and encourage them to start asking questions about God for maybe the first time.

Conclusion

We share so much about our lives on social media. Considering the very toxic and argumentative nature of social media these days, now is a great opportunity for us to use social media to share about Christ and the impact He has made in our lives. If you are real and stay above the fray of social media drama, your posts about Christ can go a very long way to helping someone hear the story of life change in Christ. Thus, you can be that storyteller. The challenge would be for all of us to use our social media accounts to begin to tell the story of Christ and his impact on our lives. We all have a story to share. Will you share it? It could lead to some wonderful discussions and life change.
